내셔널 지오그래픽 125주년
2013년 1월 13일 내셔널 지오그래픽 창립 125년이 되었습니다. 내셔널 지오그래픽 소사이어티(NGS, National Geographic Society)는 미국 워싱턴 DC. 에 본부를 두고 있는 세계에서 가장 큰 비영리 과학, 교육 재단입니다. 지리학, 인문학, 자연과학, 환경 보전, 역사 보호 등에 많은 관심과 지원을 하고 있습니다.
내셔널 지오그래픽 창간호 (1888년 10월)
1888년 1월 13일 33명의 탐험가와 과학자들이 워싱턴DC. Cosmos club에 모여 지리학적 지식의 확대와 보급을 목표로 설립한 것이 지금에 이르고 있습니다. 내셔널 지오그래픽 매거진은 내셔널 지오그래픽 소사이어티에서 출간하는 문자 위주의 학술 학회지였습니다만, 시간이 지나면서 모든 사람들이 쉽게 접할 수 있는 잡지의 모습을 보입니다. 훗날 Magazine 이란 말을 빼어버리고 National Geographic 으로 이름을 바꾼 것은 아이러니합니다.

내셔널 지오그래픽 125주년 기념 출판
현재, national geographic, national geographic kids, national geographic little kids, national geographic traveler, national geographic adventure, national geographic explorer, national geographic green guide 등의 7개의 잡지를 출판하고 있으며, national geographic TV, 라디오 방송도 운영하고 있으며, 완구, 소프트웨어, 교육 출판 등 다양한 영역에서 왕성한 활동을 하고 있습니다.
